Assumption College is a private, Roman Catholic, liberal arts college located in Worcester, which is the county seat of Worcester County, situated in the US state of Massachusetts, having a population estimated at a number of more than 180 000 inhabitants, fact which makes it the second largest city in New England. Worcester is often referred to as the ''Heart of the Commonwealth'', and it is noted for its mill era Victorian architecture.
Assumption College was established in October, 1904, being founded by the Augustinians of the Assumption, a Catholic order under the Augustinian Rule. It was originally located in the Greendale section of Worcester, but after the tornado struck, in June, 1953, the college was relocated to a new campus off Salisbury Street, in the west side of the city, which was officially opened in 1956. Thirteen years later, Assumption became a coeducational institution.
The college's athletic teams are known as the Assumption Greyhounds, who compete in NCAA Division II, in 23 intercollegiate sports, for both men and women. Their distinctive colors are blue and white and their mascot is Piere the Greyhound.
The list of notable alumni, from Assumption College, contains resonant names, such as: William Aubuchon, Jr. - former second generation CEO of Aubuchon Hardware, Brig. General Robert Catalanotti - former commander of the largest military base in Iraq, Christine Cannon Marcks - Senior VP and Head of Emerging Markets for Prudential Retirement, Richard Testa - world-renowned attorney on venture capital and intellectual property, and Timothy M. Barnicle - former Assistant Secretary of Labor for Policy and Budget and for Employment and Training, among others.
